Senior baseball regular season ends this week

League playoffs will start after nationals from Aug. 21-24 in Regina, Sask.

The Saint John AJ's Alpines have two games remaining in the 2025 New Brunswick Senior Baseball League regular season. SUBMITTED

The New Brunswick Senior Baseball League’s 2025 regular season ends this week, and the post-season matchups are all but set.

The Saint John AJ’s Alpines (13-13) will look to finish higher than .500 after their two games Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against the Moncton Dixie Lee Mets (9-18) at Kiwanis Park and Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the Fredericton Simpson Royals (9-18) at Royals Field.

The Royals and Mets are tied for fourth place. Regardless of the outcome of their outings versus the Alpines, they’ll have to play a best-of-three miniseries to determine the fourth playoff seed and the opponent for the top-ranked Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders (19-9).

The Ironmen locked up second place, and a post-season date with the No. 3 seeded Alpines, after ending their regular-season schedule with a 10-1 loss to the two-time defending champ Islanders Aug. 7 at Ironmen Field.

The Islanders swept a doubleheader against the Alpines in their regular-season finale Aug. 9 at Memorial Field, winning the first game 12-0 and the second contest 2-1. That followed a 5-0 Mets win over the Royals Aug. 8 in Fredericton and a 6-5 triumph for the Royals over Saint John Aug. 7 in the Port City. Saint John edged Fredericton 13-12 Aug. 5 in the province’s capital.

The league playoffs will get underway after the 2025 Baseball Canada Men’s National Championship from Aug. 21-24 in Regina, Sask. For the second straight year, the Islanders will represent the New Brunswick circuit on the national stage.

Capital City quarterfinals in progress

The Devon Boys Lawn Care Orioles swept the Oromocto Veteran Farmer Pioneers in two straight games in the best-of-three Capital City Intermediate Baseball League quarterfinals, beating the Pioneers 15-5 in Game 2 Aug. 7 at Royals Field after earning a 10-7 win in Game 1 Aug. 5 at Fisher Field.

The Fredericton Launchpad Sports Expos forced a Game 3 in the other series after toppling the Fredericton Nissan Astros 13-6 in Game 2 Monday at Royals Field. The Astros won the first game 8-6 Aug. 7 at Royals Field. The deciding game was set for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Royals Field.

Southern N.B. league semis underway

The best-of-five Southern New Brunswick Baseball League semifinals began Monday with the Saint John Mariners defeating the Saint John Angels 7-2 at Memorial Field. Game 1 of the other series between the KV Red Sox and Dieppe Cardinals was set to start Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Lakeburn Park.

The Mariners and Angels will face off Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Field, and the Red Sox and Cardinals’ series resumes Thursday at 8 p.m. at Lakeburn Park.

Both best-of-three quarterfinals went the distance, with the Mariners defeating the Lancaster Stingrays 12-1 in the deciding game Sunday at Memorial Field. The Stingrays won 6-2 in Game 4 Aug. 6 at Memorial after falling 7-6 in Game 1 on New Brunswick Day.

The Red Sox edged the Hampton Guardians 4-3 in the first game of their series Aug. 4 at Wells Recreational Field. The Guardians blasted the Red Sox 18-8 in Game 2 Aug. 7 in Hampton, but KV ended the Guardians’ season with a 3-2 decision in Game 3 Aug. 9 in Rothesay.

One Miramichi Valley league finalist decided

One of two finalists for the Miramichi Valley Baseball League has been determined after the defending champ Tracadie Aigles swept the Newcastle A&B Lumber Cardinals for the second year in a row.

The Aigles ousted the Cardinals from the best-of-seven semifinals in four straight games with a 9-2 triumph in Game 4 Monday in Tracadie. That followed a 9-4 victory in Game 3 Sunday in Newcastle.

Tracadie took the second contest by a 9-1 margin Aug. 7 at home and won the series opener 13-5 Aug. 6 in Newcastle.

In the other semifinal, the Dalhousie McIntyre Refrigeration Dodgers led the Chatham Head Tigers 2-1 heading into Game 4 Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Waldo Henderson Memorial Field. The Dodgers prevailed by an 8-5 margin in Game 3 Sunday in Dalhousie after winning the second game 6-2 Aug. 8 in Chatham Head and losing the first one 14-7 Aug. 5 at home.

Game 5 between the Dodgers and Tigers is Thursday at 8 p.m. in Dalhousie. If needed, the series will return to Chatham Head for Game 6 Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. Game 7 is slated for Aug. 19 at 8 p.m. in Dalhousie, if necessary.

Both league finalists from all three intermediate leagues will advance to the provincial tournament next month in Fredericton, with the league champions earning the higher seed.
