Chatham improves to 8-2 in its last 10 games; Saint John is 6-4 and Fredericton and Moncton are 3-7 in the same span

The Chatham Miramichi Honda Ironmen are now the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League’s hottest team, while the Saint John AJ’s Alpines aren’t far behind.

The Ironmen (12-8) held onto third place in the five-team league, but improved to 8-2 in their last 10 contests after thumping the Moncton Dixie Lee Mets 10-1 July 17 at Ironmen Field after an 8-5 triumph over the Alpines (11-6) July 15 in Miramichi.

The Alpines are 6-4 in their last 10 outings, and the Mets (6-14) and Fredericton Simpson Royals have each gone 3-7 in that span. The two-time defending champ Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders (13-7) have split their last 10 games.

In other senior baseball action last week, the Royals (5-12) downed the Mets 10-6 July 16 at Kiwanis Park before losing three of four games to the Islanders in back-to-back doubleheaders on Prince Edward Island. Charlottetown took the first game 2-0 July 19, followed by a 7-3 Royals win.

Sunday’s doubleheader at Victoria Park saw the Islanders win the opening contest 13-1 and prevail by a 7-1 margin in Game 2.

The game slated for Sunday between Saint John and Moncton at Kiwanis Park was postponed. No makeup date has been announced yet.

Play resumes Thursday with games between Chatham and Fredericton at 7:30 p.m. at Ironmen Field and a doubleheader between Moncton and Saint John at 7 and 9:30 p.m. at Memorial Field.

The Alpines will be in Fredericton Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the Ironmen will host the Islanders for a doubleheader Saturday at 2 and 5 p.m. The Alpines will visit the Royals again Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The Royals will be in Moncton July 27 at 7 p.m.
 

Mudcats take the lead in junior league

The Metro Mudcats have moved into first place in the four-team New Brunswick Junior Baseball League after winning two of their last three games, although they and the Fredericton Simpson Junior Royals each have three games in hand on the Saint John Doiron Sports Alpines and Chatham O’Donaghue’s Junior Ironmen.
 

The Mudcats (11-5) blanked the Royals (6-10) 15-0 July 14 at Kiwanis Park before falling 9-0 to the Alpines (12-7) July 16 at Memorial Field and beating Saint John 4-0 July 17 in the Hub City.

Meanwhile, the Ironmen (6-13) downed the Alpines 13-2 in the second game of a Port City doubleheader July 19. The Alpines took the first contest 16-3.

The Royals will be in Moncton Monday for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with the Mudcats. The Ironmen will host the Mudcats Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and the Alpines and Royals will face off at 7:30 p.m. in the province’s capital.

The junior league’s 2025 regular season will wrap up Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. contest between Fredericton and the Mudcats at Royals Field.

Cataractes suffer second loss of season

The Grand Falls McCain Cataractes (13-2) lost a game for the second time this season in Capital City Intermediate Baseball League action, falling 5-4 to the defending champ Woodstock Shiretowners (10-4) July 18 at home.

The Devon Boys Lawn Care Orioles (8-7) also beat the Fredericton Nissan Astros (6-8) 7-4 July 17 at Fisher Field.

The game slated for July 15 between the Shiretowners and Fredericton Launchpad Sports Expos (4-9) at Royals Field was postponed. No makeup date has been announced.

The Expos and Oromocto Veteran Farmer Pioneers (0-11) will meet Monday at 6 p.m. at Deer Park, and the Cataractes and Astros will face off at 6 p.m. at Royals Field. The Shiretowners and Orioles will renew acquaintances at 8 p.m. at Royals Field.

The Pioneers and Orioles will play Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Oromocto, the Astros and Expos have a 6:30 p.m. date at Royals Field, and the Shiretowners will be in Grand Falls for a 7:30 p.m. start. Thursday’s games will feature the Expos and Orioles at 6:30 p.m. at Fisher Field, and the Astros will be in Woodstock at 7:30 p.m.

The Pioneers and Cataractes will play a doubleheader Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m. in Grand Falls. Oromocto will take on the Expos July 27 at 6 p.m. at Thompson Field.

Dieppe extends lead in Southern N.B. league

The Dieppe Cardinals tightened their grip on the top spot in the Southern New Brunswick Baseball League with a 12-2 victory over the KV Red Sox July 17 at Lakeburn Park.

The July 18 contest between the Cardinals (13-3-1) and Hampton Guardians (4-9-3) in Hampton ended in a 9-9 draw.

The Lancaster Stingrays (3-10) and Saint John Angels (7-5-1) will face off Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Field. The Saint John Mariners (7-6-1) and Red Sox (8-9) will meet Wednesday at Wells Recreational Field in Rothesay, and the Stingrays and Guardians will hit the field Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Hampton. The Angels will be in Dieppe Thursday for an 8 p.m. date.

The Angels and Stingrays will do battle Saturday at 2 p.m. in Grand Bay-Westfield, and the Stingrays and Mariners will face off July 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Field. The Guardians and Angels have a 7:30 p.m. showdown set for July 28 at Memorial Field.

Logjam in Miramichi Valley league continues

The Miramichi Valley Baseball League remained airtight last week, with only four and a half games between first and fourth place, and two and a half games separating first from second.

The league-leading Dalhousie Dodgers (9-3-3) extended their winning streak to four games with a 19-9 triumph over the defending champ Tracadie Aigles (6-6-1) July 18 at home. The Dodgers also beat the Newcastle A&B Lumber Cardinals (8-5-1) 7-2 July 16.

The Chatham Head Tigers (5-7-2) dropped a 14-4 decision in Tracadie July 17 after falling 8-1 in extra innings to the Cardinals July 15 at home.

The Tigers will entertain the Aigles Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., and the Cardinals will be in Dalhousie at 8 p.m. Newcastle will host Tracadie Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., and the Dodgers and Aigles will meet Thursday at 8 p.m. in Tracadie.

The Cardinals will play a makeup game in Tracadie July 28 at 7:30 p.m.
